I don't know if it's deep thought (people that I've seen on substances are usually babbling nonsense though it may seem deep & philosophical to the others who are also stoned!) or just a different way of seeing things, a different way of thinking...a number of writers used drugs to unleash creativity. I wouldn't recommend it!
I have never tried drugs & I don't drink. I don't believe in using substances that may damage brain cells. I'm also far too much of a control freak to give up control to something! I'd be a prime candidate for a "bad trip" because I may become panicky or paranoid. Though when I hear people describe the sensations & experiences while on drugs, it does sound fascinating.
I know that alcohol seems to make a lot of people more talkative, sentimental, pensive etc. I've seen men that are normally unemotional reduced to tears & talking about life & love so passionately while intoxicated. It reduces inhibitions & opens people up emotionally. It relaxes them so that they can speak more freely than they normally would. Drugs would do the same sort of thing but also because they are altering brain chemistry they may make a person imagine things or think things they normally wouldn't.
Luckily I'm open & honest about my feelings without needing liquid courage (or pills or weed) to unleash them! Sometimes it's lonely being the only sober one in the room but oh well! At least I get to watch people make fools of themselves...

I can only speak for myself but when i am high (or more precisely: stoned) i cannot make myself very useful. I tend to be very lazy. Everything that is of direct use means getting up, it therefore implies hindrances. I guess i tend to contemplate and talk about very fundamental things because it gives a feeling like new doors are opening to an insight on the world order each time i am addressing a new subject. Conceptual questions are just more fun than real problems because i do not have to move to go a next level.
But i must add to this: not smoking pot helps a lot in finding reasonable answers and effective solutions!

Well, being high on marijuana is kind of a different reality. Not to say that one is totally out of it, because that's b.s. It's just that you begin to focus on things besides your immediate situation (like bills, grocery shopping, sun. night TV). It allows you to kind of step outside the lines (you like that eh?) and think about things that you've never pondered before.
And yes, philosophers of the past probably were high - opiates were widely used and available (but that's much more hardcore than a little pot). Most likely the deep thoughts will just lead a stoner around in funny little circles. People should really record the silly things they talk about while high. Funny stuff!!

They do not. They just get "spacey". True philosophy requires a clear mind, the courage to fearlessly re-examine all ideas and the attention span to follow a train of thought where it might lead you. All things marijuana will tend to destroy.
These people may actually have a genuine philosophical bent, and the marijuana may make them less shy about expressing it, but in all other ways, it is detrimental.

It sometime unlocking certain doors within us....Have you heard that the Truth is within? It does not mean that marijuana is an ultimate key, or remedy from ignorance as many may conclude...but it gives you a glimps of what you store within, and you can go for it and bring it on a surface...without dope stimuli....Knock and door shall be open for you.....Of course not accidently , with a puff of smoke, but consciously, with your own right to know who you really are...notice , not who others are, but who YOU really are.

The deepest thought of someone I've known who smokes is the contemplation of string. How deep is that?

Ha! That happened to me. Basically, it helped me focus on what's important and start seeing reality. I saw past the dogma and found my own spirituality. I had some cool experiences. It really helped me find myself.
