The word vegan, usually pronounced [ˈviːgən], was originally derived from "vegetarian" in 1944 when Elsie Shrigley and Donald Watson, frustrated that the term "vegetarianism" had come to include the eating of dairy products, founded the UK Vegan Society. They combined the first three and last two letters of vegetarian to form "vegan," which they saw as "the beginning and end of vegetarian."[4]
However I pronounce it the way you do.

The correct way to say it is "VEE GAN"
When you say VAY GAN, that is like saying you are from the star system Vega, pronounced "VAY GAH"

I would say vee-gun. I suppose you could say what you like, but most people say vee-gun that I've heard.

And why is it not vedge-un? Like vedge-atarian?

Try THAT one on!
