That's Eritrea, and it took a bloody civil war to split.
Eritrea was first in a federation with Ethiopia, and when in 1962 this country became independent, Eritrea became an Ethiopian province. In 1991 the Eritrean People's Liberation Front took control until the independence in 1993. Refugees of that war rested a long time in Sudan, with the actual situation there some try to return.
On 121'000 square kilometers live about 4,5 Million people, half of them Christians, half Muslim. The capital is Asmara.
The name of the country comes from the Greek word for red, the Red Sea being to the east of the country. Since the independence of Eritrea Ethiopia has no more sea coast or port.
