The field of view gets smaller, yes.

The brightness of illumination DECREASES.
Think about it like this : imagine that the whole field of view (lowest magnification) has 100 lights behind the specimen, and you zoom in so that you see only 1/10 (arbitrary number) of that field of view (medium magnification), then there are only 10 lights behind the fielw of view that you are looking at.

1/10 of the lights for 1/10 of the view seems fine, but remember that the total light that reaches your eye is now only 10 instead of 100, because the other 90 lights are blocked from your view.
Ergo, less illumination in smaller field of view.

Not sure about the illumination, but I would imagine that it wouldn't change since you are not allowing anymore or any less light to come through.

i am not quite sure of the illumination
but i do know that the field view decrease
imagina putting a ruler across the fields of view...as you increase the magnification, the tick marks of the ruler get smaller, meaning that the view is getting smaller. i am not sure if i explained it clearly but it is the best i could do

i do not comprehend why you at the instantaneous are not seeing something. The lake water, quite, must have quite some microorganisms. you're unlikely to work out bacteria, as they are VERY small, yet such issues as amoeba, rotifers and paramecia should be ample interior the lake water, and they should be seen devoid of stains. in case you are able to, attempt adjusting the attitude, intensity or polarization of the gentle. As to the added spotlight, they should be accessible from anyplace that still sells microscopes.
