It is a movie called "Soulman"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091991/

The punchline of the movie was something like.
"Black people have a hard time, even now."
Try to track it down it has some great aspects and it totally on the subject.

I think you are referring to the book "Black Like Me". The author took some kind of substance that made his melanin increase and darken his skin so he would pass for a black man. I remember that one problem he had was finding a public bathroom that he could use, as in those days these were separated for "white people" and "black people" and a lot of public places didn't have one for "black people". Also, he couldn't just stop and eat any place he wanted because many diners in the deep south didn't serve blacks. An interesting book. A recommended read.

um...maybe he would have faced being looked down on. Like other people wouldn't respect him since he was black, and would just ignore him.
