There's a lot of issues that can potentially cause your computer to slow down.
First, you should defragment your hard drive every month to keep things running smooth. In Windows XP, go to your Start Menu and choose All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter and click the Defragment button.
Second, you may be running programs that are bogging down your system. Norton AntiVirus is a common culprit here; if you have it, I would recommend uninstalling and downloading a more efficient, free antivirus program like AVG Free or Clamwin.
Third, you might have a virus. Run a virus scan. If you don't know hon, take it to your friendly local computer repair shop for help.
Finally, if none of these help, you probably just have too old of a computer and need to upgrade. The cheapest option is to buy more RAM, but for some older computers, you may be better off just buying a whole new computer.

first go to your start menu, then programs, then accessories, then system tools, do a disk cleanup first, then after it finishes follow the first steps again and do a disk defragment. This will take a while but will make your computer run more efficiently and faster. You should do this monthly to keep it running smoother. Also, if you don't have it, download the free adaware program off of downloads.com and use it once a week to keep your computer free of spyware that will slow your computer down. If none of these help you may need more ram (memory) on your computer so that you can view screens and websites more efficiently.

Your Computer can just be very old and that is how it works or you may have too many programs on it. Try uninstalling the programs that are one your computer that you don't use anymore. By deleting these your Computer will have more memory space if you have too many programs your computer's memory space will be too full and it will work very slow. Also having screensavers and desktop pictures also clogs your memory.

The main two reasons for a slower computer are:
Full / fragmented (messy) hard drive
Spyware / viruses
Full / fragmented (messy) hard drive:
*Uninstall programs you don't use anymore
*Backup files onto CD and remove them from your computer.
*Run a cleaning program like Ccleaner - http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/
*After your harddrive is cleared out to at LEAST 25% empty - you need to defragment it. - Start > My Computer > right click on your main hard drive (C:) > Properties > Tools (tab) > Defragment
Spyware / viruses
Spybot Search & Destroy - http://www.spybot.info/en/mirrors/index.html
ClamWin - http://www.clamwin.com/
Download, install and update these... then run them. Remove what they find.
If you find any spyware or viruses, you NEED to reconsider your habits.
Stop the filesharing (if you do it), and grab Firefox and use it!
http://getfirefox.com/
With Firefox you can now use a few add-ons:
Adblock Plus - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/
Adblock Plus: Element Hiding Helper - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/4364/
FoxyTunes - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/219/
CookieSafe - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/2497/
Noscript - https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/722/

do you have any files or programs that take up a lot of hard drive space? That's happened to my comp and I just had to delete a few unwanted programs and it was fine. Otherwise did you try to reboot your computer?
