If you are talking about laundry detergent, there are great ones out there in all price ranges.
Arm and Hammer is what I usually buy because it is cheap and yet very effective and smells so good.
Stores all have their own brands and these are usually fine for a little less than the big name. You can tell a knockoff because the packaging is similar to and near the brand and it may say "compare to" or "our version of" on the bottle.
For high end, I like Tide simply for the smell, but I also know it is very good to my clothes. I don't think there is any difference between any of the big name brands. Gain and Surf are supposed to be great for smelly laundry, they are adding Febreze to Tide now, Cheer for colors, etc. Tide and Era for stains. But you know? I think if you know how to use your machines correctly, pretreat, and sort your clothes, they all come out equally no matter what kind of detergent you use for that price range.
In the end, use what you can afford, what is on sale, and what is pleasant for the smell, what works best for you if you have allergies. If you find one you like more than others, use it. But don't buy into all these special claims these days. All detergents can be used as pre-treaters, all kill germs, all are safe in all temperatures for all colors.

tide, but use less than the instructions tell you to. You can also rub some into a stain before you do the wash and it takes out the stain

Consumer Reports magazine did a test a few years ago, and they found that Costco's Kirkland brand tested the best in every catagory (although my husband thinks the smell is a little stronger than most).
