4.6 billion years is the age of the earth. It was created from an immense ball of gas which formed the basis of the earth. This in turn became a gigantic fireball which in turn became a massive ball of rock and magma. For a few hundred million years there was intense volcanic activity and the earth was bombarded with meteorites. On that basis it was ane gigantic natural disaster but the end result was our planet so maybe it wasn't such a disaster after all.
