As another person said, they went back to the old-style of wearing colored jerseys at home in the 03-04 season. They did it because of the 3rd jerseys. Many visiting teams had to carry both white and dark jerseys with them on the road because they never knew whether the home team would wear their white home jersey or their alternate jersey, which is almost always colored.
Prior to the 71-72 season, visiting teams always wore white. But the Board of Governors decided that it would be a good idea for fans in other cities to see the "colors" of the teams, so they made a switch and home wore white and visitors wore colors. The change back to the old-style was a result of the 3rd jersey program. Visiting teams only have to carry their white jerseys with them now instead of both sets of uniforms (which means 2 helmets for every player, extra jerseys in case of accidents on the road, and extra socks, in addition to the team's TWO uniforms). It was a financial decision that stemmed from the 3rd jersey program.
An interesting thing to note is that the 3rd jersey program got its impetus from the 91-92 season, in which the Original Six wore special jerseys on a few special occasions. The demand for the jerseys was phenomenal and the sales of "Vintage" jerseys skyrocketed. The choice to go with the vintage jerseys that year was made not by Bettman (as many purists would like everybody to think), but by the NHL Board of Governors and then-President John Ziegler.

I'm pretty sure the NHL league office dictated the change the season before the lockout happened. If you look at some of the old classic NHL films from years past; you'll see that teams wore their color jerseys at home before.
In the case of the Minnesota Wild in particular, I think their white road jerseys (used to be home jerseys) look a lot cooler than the two color jerseys they alternate between right now.
I think the NHL should switch back and allow the home teams to wear their white jerseys at home and the color jerseys on the road.

They went back to it starting with the 2003-04 season. Selling more jerseys was a prime factor. Also, a lot of teams had alternate jerseys.
Back in the 60s, home teams wore dark colors, and they did it again for the second half of the '91-92 season.

We've cooperated with some sellers before but the listed below one particular is simply the best. They have tons of unique jerseys including uncommon kinds that you just could hardly acquire from all other sites. The quality and services is the best you may find online with this low price. With this supplier, I do believe you aren't going to let you or your customers down..

IT'S CRAP.
it's been happening over time in Mussolini Bettman's 'new NHL' or WWE-hockey.
it started with the 'third' jersey, a marketing ploy to make faithful fans buy a 3rd jersey, in addition to the white and color ones.
the NHL (neo hockey league) needed to be seen in the bayous, swamps, and moonshine sheds of the southern US (the old Confederate States of America), and they needed to see some color in the unis. Else'n the hucksters mayz not wansta watch the hockey-rasslin'.
Thanks again bettman (you don't deserve a capital letter), you pipsqueak with the napolean complex.
Wow, I wish Don Cherry would get a hold of these answers and put 'em on his Coach's Corner show. I know he's fond of bettman and doesn't like 'old-time hockey' (wink wink)

I think it happened right after the lockout. They've been doing it for a long time now.
I asked a similar question once and some people said it was due to commercial reasons - they can sell more different jerseys, etc. Frankly I doubt that.

I know fans would generally buy away jerseys because they had more color in them.
with the home jerseys being white fans would focus more on the away team, so the home team started wearing the more colorful jerseys.
