Protons Atoms of different elements are different because they have different numbers of protons. That gives them different numbers of electrons which will mean different chemical and physical properties.

The atomic number is the number of protons in the nucleus. Since it determines the number of electrons, the atomic number determines the chemical and physical properties of an element.

Protons.

The Atomic number tells you how many Protons are in the atom's nucleus.

(As an extra bit: The atomic weight is the number of protons PLUS the number of neutrons. The weight of electrons is negligible)

protons....

the atomic number tells us how many protons are contained within that atom which makes it unique against all the other atoms of different elements...even if another atom has a different number of neutrons, i.e copper, it will still be identified as a copper atom because of the number of protons

(A) The type of protons in its nucleus. That defines the "atomic type" i.e. the id of the element. This frequently suits the type of electrons, yet electrons could be bumped off to form a charged atom ("ion") of the comparable element. changing the type of neutrons would not substitute the element yet provides an "isotope" of the comparable element.
