Before you dismiss this as a crackpot idea, think of the benefits:
*Our military has problems filling their ranks
*We need the ranks to be filled to fight the terrorists
*There is a lot of homeless people
*They currently don't contribute to society
*They would probably benefit from a military "education"
*If push comes to shove, we can afford to lose them

Think about it. It's a modest proposal.

"If push comes to shove, we can afford to lose them" How can you say that, just because someone is homeless does not mean that they are any less human beings. Most people that are lower incomes are one paycheck from being homeless. The obvious issues with your claim is...

Most homeless are actually children, or elderly, both of which can't fight in a war

A lot of homeless are war veterans who already served their country and deserve respect not to be thrown into another war.

Not all homeless are jobless, and some do contribute to society. There are people who have jobs and houses that contribute less to society than homeless.

Our military is not having that many issues filling the ranks, and if a draft for the homeless was created then a draft for everyone should be created.

How would they benifit from a "military education"? Yes they might get the GI bill but many of them already have it.

Okay, will not dismiss it as crackpot, but will consider it very poor humor.

A very large percentage of the homeless have serious mental problems which they by themselves are unable to cope with.

A large percentage of the homeless are ex-military and they often have witnessed, endured and taken part in events that would make you and I retch.

As for contributing to society, I do not have the particulars, but here in Winston-Salem many, many homeless stand on intersection corners wind, rain and snow to sell the Winston Salem Journal, 7 days a week.

I have a suggestion for you, and I am sincere. Some cold winter night, gather a couple of your friends, go to McDonalds and buy up a large sack full of hamburgers...100 or more......then drive around to the locations where the homeless hang out and sleep the night. One or two of you jump out of your warm SUV and give each one a couple of burgers.

Now I suggest this not to be hateful to you, but actually if you did this a couple of times, your compassion might increase tremendously, and wouldn't that be a blessing.

Who said that your idea was crackpot. Lets see, they can't wake up on time, otherwise they wouldb be holding down full time jobs. Number two, they have no place to stay because they don't want one, I doubt you would find them in the barracks the next day, probably more likely sleeping it off downtown. Letter 3 they have health problems due to diet of drug and alcohol, consider the medical expenses please. The last time I heard a Modest Proposal it was about taking the poor children and using them for protein supplements in England. 1700's.

A bill has been introduced to bring back the draft for men and women 18 to 42 for two years of military service or community service, so I guess that would include the homeless also.

No. Let's just see about getting the homeless to take some housing. It's there, but the drugs aren't allowed. And the mental health issues are tricky.

Homelessness is not a joke, and neither is a draft.

I think we should draft the illegal aliens.. look, they already broke the laws by entering the country illegally. If they want to prove they want to be an American, then show it. All the jobs that these illegals have taken away from Americans can then be given to the homeless and unemployed.

No. Most homeless people are not in very good shape phisically. Good meals and exercise could go a long way to improve that, but many of them have damage that cannot be reversed. Second, a large percentage of homeless people have mental issues. Don't get me wrong, i like the way you think, but i don't want these people protecting me.

I don't think it's a good idea, since most of that people are not in good mental and physical condition. How could they fight? As for the illegals, the only thing "right" the government could do is to send them back to their countries, since they don't have to serve the U.S.

Many of the homeless are veterans of armed service to this country. Neither YOU, nor YOUR President nor YOUR Vice-President can make that claim. Let's give you three uniforms and weapons, take you to Iraq and point YOU at the enemy then bring our best, brightest and bravest home. (In case you miss my meaning, the best, brightest and bravest ARE the US Military)

Well alot of those homeless people already fought in a war for you, Vietnam. And as far as illegals go alot of them already are fighting in Iraq. They have been promised citizenship for doing so. Latino men and women make up a large portion of our forces in Iraq. Most of which come from my great state of California.
