First off a favorite and an underdog are distinguished. In any sport with teams and points they give the under-dog a few points to help them. Say they give a football team 8 points, then that means the favorite has to win by more than 8 points for the gambler to win. If you see a + next to a team that means they are given the points, if you see a - then they are giving up that point totalt.

Odd are base on what the bettors like. Now if I was go to fight Mike Tyson no one would bet on my so the bookies would raise the odds until some people would bet on me Other sports use points Like if the Oakland Raiders play the Colt. No one would bet on the raider. But if you give the Raider a 21 point spread some people might bet now because thmay feel the raider will lose but not by 21 points.

Odds are based on sports betting. There are different variations depending on the sport. Let's say the Lakers +3.5 @Cleveland. If you bet on the Lakers, you get 3.5 points added to their score. If they win, or lose by 3 (or less), you win. If they lose by 4 or more, you lose.
If you bet on Cleveland -3.5, they have to win by 4 or more for you to win. There are many different bets, such as total points or goals or runs, but the principle is the same. There are also money lines, but I won't explain that now.

The odds are set to ideally get the same amount bet on BOTH teams. The reason is that the house(let's say casino) gets a percentage of the bet made, called the vigorish(juice), regardless of who wins.

If more money is bet on one team, the number changes so there is roughly the same amount bet on each team
