Sell stuff on ebay. You can cruise thrift stores, import shops, dollar stores etc. I see a lot of stuff selling for more than it would go for retail.

A very good question and one that most people can't seem to see the answer to.
I will give you and idea, and I know that it works. You can start a billing service. There are number of businesses that could use a billing service, but not full time. Do billing for a Doctor, Dentist, lawyer, ambulance service, Trash service. The fertile ground to look at are young Doctors, Dentists, etc. that are just starting up. I would suggest a small town. Remember that it would make no difference if you are in Texas or Maine. A fair charge would be 1% of a collected bill. A bill of $50.00 would give you $.50 doesn't sound like very much does it? You can send out 1000 bills a day that would gross right at $500.00 a day. Lots of bills are more but very few are less. Get more than one customer and when you have to much work to handle hire a part timer to work with you.
Edit note; Any one can tell you this or that but the bottom line is if it sounds to good to be true,.....it most likely is? Mu suggestion will make you work a little bit getting started but in the end you are going to be your own boss and work from home and take off when you want to..........and is no promise of pie in the sky.

The problem with finding legit data entry work-at-home jobs, are that
most of the material appearing on the web are scams: people who
advertise that they have the "secret", only you have to send some
dollars, and get a brochure/e-book with the guide on finding an
e-data-entry job. Their secret? Sell booklets/e-books about how to
find an e-data-entry job. Classic pyramid scam!
There is a website that post daily telecommute jobs. The jobs where you must send them a resume and interview for them.
Many of them are sales or web programming jobs, but there are some for data entry and clerical type work.
The link is in the source.
