My daughter is doing a school project and we are trying to research how much a Hershey Chocolate Bar costs each decade from 1900-1990. We had to compare something in each decade, and I thought this would be an easy idea. She and I have spent a ton of time on line looking, but have come up empty handed. Maybe there is someone out there with some Hershey's knowledge to share.

She is in the third grade, so this does not have to be indepth information.

Thanks!!!!

I know that when I was a little girl, in the 50's, candy was a nickle a bar. In fact it seemed everything was a nickle. Then in the 60's they introduced a new candy bar that cost ten cents. Only problem was that the old five cent candy somehow became smaller then it had before the newer and bigger candy bar was introduced. In the 70's candy bars went to 25 cents. And the five cent candy disappeared. Now candy bars are about 75 cents to 85 cents even up to one dollar each.

At least that's how I remember it.

I did find this online at http://www.foodtimeline.org

for a long time, Hershey used to change the size of the candy bar while keeping the price the same (five cents i think), as their costs for ingredients fluxuated. So, you may notice this in your search.

Just a lil factoid i heard on the history channel :)

I know nothing Hershey, but you can use the Consumer Price Index to determine the aproximate cost in years past.

ftp://ftp.bls.gov/pub/special.requests/cpi/cpiai.txt

Example:
Item A, Item B, Item C
Year I 112.5, 225.0, 110.0
Year II 121.5, 243.0, 128.0
Change in index points 9.0, 18.0, 18.0
Percent change 9.0/112.5 x 100 = 8.0 18.0/225.0 x 100 = 8.0 18.0/110.0 x 100 = 16.4

I couldn't get the chart to paste right but the information is respective
