Without question, he deserves consideration as "the greatest ever." However, it's quite tough to say due to how different racing has been in different eras. Formula 1 was just starting to undergo certain changes when Michael Schumacher arrived. He was very much the right driver at the right time.

Schumacher's strengths worked to greater affect in his era, letting him be the by far and away the most dominent driver of his era. Though at the same time, many of his strengths might have even served him better in earlier times - at least those which were considered more controversial. The best example of this I think might have been the "problems" he suffered at Monaco this last season. In times passed, when there was not so many TV cameras around a circuit, this probably would've resulted in his having the pole for that race! And there would have never been any question about a teammate letting him win had he raced in the 1960s!

His attitude and work ethic towards winning would have made him a top talent in any era. As would his car control and precision. But I don't know if this alone would have elevated him to the absolute top in another era. In the 1990s, his ability to drive an entire race at sprint pace set him apart and was possible due to new regulations with fuel and tires and the advant of pit stops figuring more into race strategy. Further, as this evolved in F1, his throwback ability to manage a car and preserve the car and tires would then set him apart from people that had never had to do that just to complete a race.

Fangio, Prost, Senna, and many others... there are a long list of people that can be mentioned and considered as the best drivers ever. All with different strengths and weakenesses. And in any era, all of them would have been top notch drivers, but they may not have been the most dominent. Which all comes back to the start - Schumacher was (is) a great driver, and deserves consideration as the best ever. Though I don't know if you can ever come down and effectively decide than anyone was the best ever without qualifications.

He was one of many great F1 drivers, but I could never pick the best of all time. He did very well, even though he wasn't very well liked, and he set a lot of records and has won more championships than any other driver. His record would be a lot different if Senna was still alive, though.

I can't pick just one. All great drivers bring in something new and unique that makes them special.

Difficult to say, although he achieve the greatest record in F1, but all of this not only depend on skills but in some luck too.
He able to achieve the glory during the most reliable & fast car create by Ferrari , and the poor performance by other team, also the retire of Renault in F1.
By the way, we all can see his ultra perform in the race even behind almost the competitor (accident or tech. pro.) he still able to fight to win in the race, thats the reality of racing spirit, I can say.
We can't say he is the best driver in F1 ever, but we can say he is best coz he always push hard in race and achieve today's glory. Yap, he definitely own it.

He's not even worthy of licking the dust off Senna or Fangio's boots. Sorry for being so harsh, but his unsporting actions, not started by true rivalry, swing it for me into calling him a rubbish F1 racer. Just a desire to win at all costs, no matter what happens to the others. Machiavelli's principle.
