With the help and backing of Branch Rickey, Jackie Robinson broke the modern colour barrier in MLB. (Fleetwood Walker had played for Toledo of the American Association, at the time a major league, in 1884.) While it was the beginning of the end of the ***** Leagues, it was the beginning of the political/cultural and then legal revolution that was the US civil rights movement.
It was another 7 years before Rosa Parks refused to move to the back of the bus, but Robinson helped many Americans to see that skin colour is meaningless. That was an attitudinal adjustment that too many were unable to make 12 years earlier, when Jesse Owens won 4 gold medals at the Berlin Olympics. As a note, Robinson's older brother was a team mate of Owens at those Olympics.

Jackie Robinson breaking baseball's color barrier in 1948 helped set up the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s by inspiring people and giving them hope. Back then baseball was America's Pastime, and thus it was a very significant event.

Your question is way too vague. It can be argued that it started soon after the first slaves were used. That means ancient history. You should narrow your focus some.

He crossed the color barrier. Baseball was life in those days so for a player to have the courage to play during that time of anti- blacks is phenomenal. He played well even, which was even nicer. He opened the door for you Willie May's Ken Griffey Jr's etc.

He was the first African-American to play in the major leagues. He proved that black people can play in the majors even though the sport only had white players at the time. He proved all his critics wrong.
