I've been shocked more times than i can remember.. but then again I used to do industrial electric at one time.
What you describe sounds more like the motor going bad.. (grinding & sparks.. the sparks were more likely thermal sparks from the brushes frying) Prob wouldnt have shocked you anyway.. for one unless you live in a very old house the GFI (ground fault interuptor) would have kicked out way before that happened...
But you were right to throw it away.. it was toast..

Grinding noise and sparks is more likely that something got into the fan and motor- the thing is probably broken by now.
It is tough to get shocked from things in bathrooms- besides the GFCI outlets that automatically shut off if electricity is flowing the wrong way, most hair driers are 'double insulated', which makes it really hard for electricity to get from the inside to where you are.

I've been shocked more than a few times. It hurts. I think what happened in your dryer is a spring popped out of place and it's carbon brush flew into the moving motor mechanism. That would certainly explain your grinding noise and sparks.

No, but once my friend shocked me when he got out my car. And then he kept shocking me all day long. It got to the point where I was saying "It's electric!!" and then I would do the electric slide.

I once accidentally microwaved aluminum foil and it lit on fire but I stopped it fast enough. I thought it was going to explode...
