By compact disc I mean everything from music CD's to DVD's... all of it. What kind of technology is next?

Aaah! I love CDs. I'm sure they'll come out with memory chips within the next 10 years

People will always need hard copies -it's the only way to prevent data loss.

A birthday card means more than an e-card. Why because it is real and tangible. I like buying CD's and DVD's. You don't have to worry about the security risks on either whereas you do whenever you download something.

20 years ago, people thought we'd all be talking on video phones but we're not. I've had a video phone and never used it for a video call. I didn't need to.

Your's is a good question but our needs dictate the direction of technology. If something won't do what we want it to we either won't but it or we get rid of it quickly and it flops.

They won't become extinct, they'll just be replaced with something that has greater memory capacity. eg Blu-ray.

Cylinder recording > vinyl> tape> CD > MD> DVD> Blu-ray/ HD-DVD. There's 100+ years of hard copy for you.

Well with the Blu Ray and other DVD still in disc format I'd say it'll be 5 years or more before we see some type of replacement.

What's a compact disc? Like an eight-track ?

It'll go extinct at about the same time flash or non-volital ram can match the capacity and price..

Who knows. It's pretty sad that in today's society, you buy a computer and you walk out of the store and it's obsolete.
