A three month old child should only be given cereal as a medical treatment for certain conditions such as GER. Giving cereal before 6 months of age carries risk, many of which do not show up until later. If your doctor told you that it was ok to start cereal at 3 months or earlier they are misinformed, and are going against the recommendation of every reputable pediatric, health, and nutrition organization.

The following organizations recommend that all babies be exclusively breastfed (no cereal, juice or any other foods) for the first 6 months of life (not the first 4-6 months):
* World Health Organization
* UNICEF
* US Department of Health & Human Services
* American Academy of Pediatrics
* American Academy of Family Physicians
* American Dietetic Association
* Australian National Health and Medical Research Council
* Royal Australian College of General Practitioners
* Health Canada
Most babies will become developmentally and physiologically ready to eat solids by 6-9 months of age. For some babies, delaying solids longer than six months can be a good thing; for example, some doctors may recommend delaying solids for 12 months if there is a family history of allergies.

It's recommended that you wait until 6 mos, but some doctors recommend introducing it early for some babies. I personally think 3 months is too early....but I also think that rice cereal is a waste of time. It has no nutritional value whatsoever...I'd rather start a baby on something with nutrients and some sort of flavor.

I gave my daugther rice cereal by spoon at 2 1/2 months, she was not getting enough from the formula, so the doctor said it was fine. Shes now 5 months and doing great. I woudn't give banana cereal yet, I would just use rice cereal, its easier to digest. Just about 1/2 tsp mixed with the formula in a bowl, best in the morning. Don't give to much though, the stomach is still forming.

This goes back to the every baby is unique thing. My daughter was eating baby food when she was two months old. People are always quoting the books saying you can't give them cereal until they are four months old, and don't give them regular food until they are 6 months old. Don't do this, and don't do that. You have to listen to your child. He'll let you know when he's ready to take the next step.

At 3 months, babies can't actually digest cereal and should only be given cereal for medical reasons such as gastroesophageal reflux. There are old wives tales about feeding cereal to get them to sleep longer without being hungry. But that is just for the mom's comfort, not the baby. Be sure you are using a formula that has enough nutrients and feed him on a schedule. As long as he is gaining weight appropriately, he is getting enough without the cereal.

You are likely to get a wide range of answers to this question. Our pediatrician says it depends on the child. If they are big, healthy and hungry, start them on soft table food at 4 months along with their baby food. We are having our sixth child this week and all have been different. Our 11 month old daughter has been eating table food since she was 4 months old, feeds herself now and eats everything except steak. She has always chewed thoroughly and can handle it all. She's a very healthy baby and hates baby food.

i was told my kids would get allergies to food if i did what you are doing but i did it anyway and all three are fine,your her mum you usually know what is right for your child even if someone else disagrees.you could mix some baby rice for breakfast time only few teaspoons full,not a lot.or alittle rusk with formula so its soft and so the formula is the same as what she is used to.(or add breast milk if you are breast feeding)
