How do I know if can add an extra hard drive to my HP Pavillion a1203w?

I checked the specs-but don't see anything

it says you have 1 open hard drive slot and 1 open CD or DVD slot

How many do you have now? If you have one, you can. Probably, you could add more than one if you hook up to the drive controller that the CD/DVD drive is on. You can always buy external USB storage too.
