Hi. For one thing it gives us data on what is happening long term. One data point is like writing down the time. It's only useful for a very short period.

The value lies in the use of inputing that data into computer model so that such models may render a perdiction better than any person can offer.

the value is not in the prediction itself.
it is in the usage of the prediction
i am sure you can come up with some examples where it is extremely handy to know what weather it will be within the next couple of hours / tomorrow

For Example
If this wasn't done, you wouldn't know when a hurricane or tornado was forming, you wouldn't know where it was likely to go or how strong it is. You wouldn't have time to get prepared or evacuated.
