The quake off the coast of Sumatra was Richter 9. There are statistically a couple of these a century. The previous one was off Chile in 1960.
The fact is Indonesia is one of the most quake prone areas in the world. You might as well ask why did Krakatoa kill 35,000 in 19th century and earlier that century Tambora was an even bigger volcano than Kakatoa.
Unfortunately, we have a much bigger population now, and great natural distasters like this will cause more deaths than ever in the past.
Also, thousands would have survived the 2004 tsunami, if the Indian Ocean had had the tsunami alarm system. It onle needed people to move a couple kms inland to be safe, and places like Sri Lanka had ample time to do that, if there had been a good warning system.
There was nothing unduly special about that quake. One will probably happen again on that scale this century, most likely somewhere else, but could be Indonesia again. It is the price they have for having so many wonderful islands.

This is a poorly stated question. Earthquakes are a part of the tectonic history, and most commonly are felt along the Ring of Fire and other subduction zones. The fact that Asia has two areas of continent-continent subduction leads to an increase of tectonic activity there. If people don't like they can move somewhere else. They should be forewarned: there is no place safe from natural disasters, and death is the ultimate end of life.

your question should probably have been placed in Religion and Spirituality from the way you worded it. But from a purely scientific standpoint, the plates that make up the whole of the APAC region are still shifting. India (formerly a piece of Africa) is still subducting under China.

If a few million(£,$) had been spent on tsunami warning equipment hundreds of thousands of people would have been saved.
