Right now I am going to school to get my associates in nursing and by the summer of 2008 I will be an RN (Yay!). I live on Long Island and I know the starting salary is about $60,000 (without differentials) at the [private] hospital I work for (as opposed to a state or government hospital). Also, the hospital will pay for you to continue with your education (i.e. bachelors/masters) as long as you get above a certain GPA, which sounds good to me (current GPA 4.0 nursing, 3.4 cumulative).

My boyfriend and I might relocate to NC and I heard that nurses don’t make good money there. Any nurses out there that might want to help out here? Or does any one know any good websites that I can get this information from? (Not just average salaries, I'm talking average STARTING salaries of RN's).

This is the type of answer I'm looking for:
Hi, I live in ________________ (city, state). The starting salary for an RN with her associates is $________. Please do not answer with websites like salary.com, etc... or to check monster.com, etc... I know this already. If you read my question you'll know exactly what I'm asking. Plain and simple.

This varies tremendously from state to state and region to region. Glad to hear you're getting your RN instead of LPN, that increases your salary and opportunities significantly. Impressed you got a 4.0 in Nursing, we only had one girl who got straight A's out of our class of 36. I had nothing near it, about a 2.75 in nursing I think, 3.4 overall.

Anyway, I found this information:
http://www.nursingdegreeguide.org/articles/careers/salaries_of_nurses.php

You might try calling the HR department of all the hospitals in the area you are going to move to. Tell them you are a graduating nurse in a local college and you making a presentation to the class and would like to know the starting salary, benefits, differentials, etc. They will be happy to tell you this since they will think you are imparting this info to 30+ new grad nurses all looking for jobs in the area, which sounds much better than someone who is thinking about "maybe" moving to the area, sometimes and may or may not work there.

Congratulations in advance on your RN!

The salary/remuneration for a particular job is the market value for a particular profession and designation at the city/town where the office is located. Job postings at websites like Monster, Yahoo HotJobs and Careerbuilder carry information about salaries. The Govt Dept of Labor, (www.bls.gov) Bureau of statistics has information about median salaries for different professions and details of additional compensation offered. Other online resources are salary.com and payscale. Your salary will also depend on your educational qualification and how you handle your career.
