He can visit for no more than six months. If he was born in Greece or spent some of his youth there, he may not been erased from the draft list. He has to go to the nearest Greek embassy or consulate in order to get a paper that says he is exempt from the draft because he is a foreign resident.

When I went one time as a younger man I was told because I served in the US Army in Europe, And because it was considered part of the NATO Forces, that the Greek Government would exempt me for obligatory service. Served in Berlin during the time of occupation. The Wall had not come down yet. So if your friend can show that he has served somehow with NATO forces he may be exempt. There are probably other exemptions. An inquiry at the local consulate in your area might be helpful.

Listen to Spartan and check with those that have the authority to give you certain and valid answers. All the laws are always subject to change and what used to be true yesterday may not be so tomorrow.
Also the EU has had an impact on many changes, so the prudent thing to go is to check with the authorities, but do make sure you cross reference it and keep names and proof. (Printouts of answers)

Yes, until he is 49. But if he's only coming for a holiday, he has nothing to worry about. A Greek-American friend of mine stayed here for six years before he was enrolled (so he went back to New York) lol.
