Paul,
Have you seen a chiropractor or doctor yet for your back? That should be your first step.
What are your symptoms-are they anything like this?
Weakness in one leg or both legs
Numbness and tingling in one leg (pins & needles)
A burning pain centered in the low back
Loss of bladder or bowel control (seek medical attention immediately)
Back pain with gradually increasing leg pain. (If you have weakness in both legs. Seek immediate attention.)
My husband was scheduled for surgery but then he found out that he would be out of work for 12 weeks (without pay), so we looked for alternatives.
I did find a good back program that has helped him allot. He has gone from moaning and groaning when getting out of bed in the morning to be able to get out of bed without me hearing him--for him that's a big improvement. He is a construction worker and now he doesn't have to live on Tylenol or Ibuprofen all day.
I went to http://snipurl.com/momma , and picked him up back the lose the back pain program and we have never looked back. Since I don't know how involved your health care practioner is with your back problems I would suggest that you show it to him/her.
Although my husband originally didn't believe that an online program could help him, he took at look at the credentials of the medical advisory board, and read over all the information. For him it has worked very well. Will it work for you? I don't know.
I know how bad back pain can be, so I wish you luck in getting help.

Gone are the days when you are told to lie flat on a board. I had a slipped disc for years which trapped my siatic nerve. The only way i could get comfortable is lying in the fetal position. This was also what my consultant suggested.
Definate bed rest until the pain eases, but you should go to the docs if this doesn't ease it.
I ended up going for an operation, because the disc wasn't going to go back in. What they did, was trim the disc and shave some bone to make more room for my nerves. I'm still recovering, but the pain is nothing to what i was dealing with all those years.
Take Care
Hope this helps.

Go see your doctor. I have had a bad back for years which was eventually diagnosed as degenerative disc disease but i'd had physio and acupuncture for it to no avail. in the end i was sent to a pain management specialist who manages to keep my pain under control with a series of operations when i need them and at the moment i have been pain free since last june.
This is an extreme measure i might point out but it goes to show that if there are plenty of options and no matter how bad it is there's always something that can be done, but your first point of call is to go to your GP. That's what they're there for!

Go to an injury clinic and get it massaged. They use a machine that penetrates deep into the body.It is wonderful. You might need a few sessions but it is worth it.
