So my best friend and I are planning on going tanning before we leave for a dance trip in L.A. and both of us have never been tanning before...is there a certain way to do it? how would you go about tanning? Which method is better? What are step by step instructions on how to tan? What should we wear? Any tips we could use? The more the better...Thanks!

Regardless of the color of your skin, tanning is damaging to your skin, especially if you are naturally pale, have light hair, and blue eyes. Be smart, stay out of the sun and tanning booths. Wear sun screen products properly at all times and you are less likely to end up looking old before your time and with skin cancer!

Fake Bake & St Tropez I think are the best fake tans. They are designed so that your tan develops evenly should you not apply it eveny. Exofilate you skin at least 2 nights in a row before applying & moistrize your skin afterwards.

Before applying your fake tan, shower & apply the tan WITHOUT moisturizing first (you can get a tanning mit so that you don't stain your hands) & after you've applied your tan, gently rub in a little moisturzer on your rests, knees, elbows & ankles & the knuckles on your hands as these areas are normaly drier.

Best time I think is to apply about an hour before you go to bed because it takes overnight to develop. Don't worry if your tan doesn't look evenly applied & you look like if you've been covered in army camouflage, as long as you have covered ever area it should come up even. Old loose, long sleeved pyjamas are the best to wear for 2 reason; you don't get tan marks - if you wear short sleeves you can sometimes see the mark & it helps keep your bedsheets clean, even though it washes out.

These are my two favourite fake tans but I like Fake Bake the best.

Hope this helps but it can a few times to perfect this so don't give up!

Yea, I'm going with all the other people, I wouldn't go tanning but who am I to tell you that, it's really bad for ur skin and I just wouldn't do it.....But you could go get a spray on "fake" tan that works good but smells bad.....

The best advice for your health is don't do it at all! If you insist on looking tan, then use one of those spray-on tans that the pros can give you. They look as good as a "real" tan without risking your skin.

You aren't going to get tan just going once. You are more likely to just look a little red and feel it! but ...you want to be on your back(some people turn halfway through) you want your arms away from your body and your knees slightly bent. You don't want your legs flat b/c you will have a white line under your butt but you don't want your knees bent too much b/c you will end up with the white line on the back of your knee!
Do use lotion or you will regret it and I wouldn't recommend going for the full 20 minutes if you have a dance recital or something coming up soon.
good luck and have fun!

Well all I know is NEVER EVER go to get a tan in a tanning bed. It doesn't work well and it is terrible for your skin. I wouldn't tan. Just be happy with your beautiful skin color.

I would not go more than 10 minutes, make sure you wear the goggles provided. Wear a swimming suit or nothing at all. I like the stand up ones only because I am afraid they are not that clean if you are using the lay down ones.

well, tanning beds are bad for your skin. Spray tans or any fake tans turn out orange, so i wouldnt do that either...just leave your skin natural, you will probably look better and be healthir that way, just stay natural
