I've been having this problem for a long time.I don't live in an English speaking,my English is good. And because of that I found that most people around me aren't that good in English,so they make mistakes .The problem is that they spell some words in a wrong way and when I spell them right, they say that I am wrong and that my pronunciation is wrong!!!Today,in university, our professor wrote the word"odour and colour" and I write in American English so I wrote "odor and color".Also they spell the word"Molisch" "Molish" .Anyways, this professor said that my spelling is wrong and there's no such thing as odor, color or Molisch and that it isn't "ketose" ,it's keto-sugar.Keto is the adjective and ketose is the noun so i see no difference. And sometimes my friends use some words that they think they mean some thing but they mean some completely different thing and I am afraid I might lose them if I try to correct them, but I can't stand them thinking that I am wrong even though I am right.

I think the "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" idea is the correct one. You are using American English, and your professor is using British English. Both are, in a sense, correct.

I you want to be super-right, you're going to need to research each word that comes into question and understand the origin and history of each spelling - which could be quite interesting, actually - and then decide which spelling is the most correct in your specific region.

But honestly, for the sake of your time and sanity, I'd simply keep track of both spellings and be alert to which one is currently right. In this class, I'd use "colour" and "odour", and in some future class, taught by someone speaking American English, you may want to use "color" and "odor".

It's all human beings making this stuff up anyway, so correctness is truly a matter of agreement, rather than a law.

never remind people you are always right, you will definitely loose them over a short period of time. your color and odor are spelled correct in English (western standards), no idea what Molish and Ketose are, sorry. When your trying to prove your point of English spelling, invite them over to your Yahoo Answers and show them asking and receiving answers to the very point you are trying to make, be cautious, alot of english speaking PreTeen and Teenagers on this sight can't spell for their lives!!!

the data base of thinking is woven together from fabrics that have sounding as a history in to language and we have individually applied gifts of history that are crude and (OR) a past intelligent meaning that has floundered in today world, your friends wants an easy button(joke) like the TV commericals, the orgins of words are in rare books I've had two of these one was early 1723 and the other was a Victorian classic made just to fill someone library so they could have knowledgeable text for quirks like you ask, learning was once so top~down oppressive that no one questioned anything or they were removed from the sources of academics, today's people have lost the base of old text books and rely Soley on new book that are unfounded in the relevance's that can't be linked to concepts:thus taking everything for granted can be dangerous and you know the difference

You're in a tough spot. You might ask yourself what's more important to you...being correct or fitting in. Only you know the answer. Any way you can transfer to another institution that would be a "better fit" for you?
Good luck!
