I've been having this problem for a long time.I don't live in an English speaking,my English is good. And because of that I found that most people around me aren't that good in English,so they make mistakes .The problem is that they spell some words in a wrong way and when I spell them right, they say that I am wrong and that my pronunciation is wrong!!!Today,in university, our professor wrote the word"odour and colour" and I write in American English so I wrote "odor and color".Also they spell the word"Molisch" "Molish" .Anyways, this professor said that my spelling is wrong and there's no such thing as odor, color or Molish and that it isn't "ketose" ,it's keto-sugar.Keto is the adjective and ketose is the noun so i see no difference. And sometimes my friends use some words that they think they mean some thing but they mean some completely different thing and I am afraid I might lose them if I try to correct them, but I can't stand them thinking that I am wrong even though I am right.

Tell your prof that it can be spelled both ways, and prove it to him by showing him an amercan english dictionary.

Yes, you are in a predicament.
If you really want to help your friends to learn the correct spellings of words, without offending them, try the following.
Get hold of two good dictionaries:one American English and the other British English. Get a game of scrabble. Invite your friends to a game of scrabble with you. Offer a prize to the winner - it need not be an expensive one,.
Make it a condition that only words found in either dictionary would be acceptable. When you find a word is wrongly spelt, challenge it and make the group refer to both dictionaries. This way they would be tempted to learn spellings and also help you in your mission.
Once you convert a few of your friends this way, extend this invitation to the obdurate professor to play scrabble with you and the converted friends.
