As you can see this method only creates an underline on top of the original undeline of the link - compare the two green underlines - if the blue of the original blue underline of the link wasn't there the green would be as green as in an underlining of a non link.

If you add "text-decoration: none;" to your link style, then the normal link underline will be suppressed and you'll see only the green underline.
