The earth is approx. 93 million miles from the sun. Radiation does reach the other planets but its effect differs. The four planets nearest the sun and their temperatures are 1. Mercury; 179C 2. Venus; 464C 3. Earth; 15C and then 3. Mars -65C. All of these planets are called terrestrial planets because these planets are rocky objects with solid surfaces and evolved under nearly the same conditions and consequently exhibit similar physical properties. However each atmosphere differs. Example: Mercury has no atmosphere at all and can not support water. Venus' high temperature is primarily due to a runaway greenhouse effect caused by the heavy atmosphere of carbon dioxide. Sunlight passes through the atmosphere to heat the surface of the planet. Heat is radiated out, but is trapped by the dense atmosphere and not allowed to escape into space. This makes Venus hotter than Mercury. The atmosphere of Mars is composed primarily of carbon dioxide with small amounts of other gases. The radiation that comes from the sun has a different effect on each of these planets and has a lot to do with their atmospheres. The sun is about 93 million miles from Earth.
Radiation does reach the other planets (Venus and Mercury) that are closer to it. The sun's radiation goes in all directions from the sphere, so the fact that radiation hits Mercury has no effect on Earth except when Mercury is exactly between the sun and Earth. Even then, the impact is incredibly small because of how tiny Mercury is in comparison to the sun.
