Okay, so, trying to answer the question as you asked it...I grew up on a farm and raised steers in 4-H and these are what I am familiar with at least in Michigan, the list is certainly incomplete. (spellings are probably wrong)

Beef: Charolais, Angus, (American?)Shorthorn, Limosine, Maine-Anjus, Hereford, Semital

Dairy: Holstein, Guernsey, Jersy

Other: Texas Longhorn, Highland (the little short hairy ones)

Alot of the beef are mixes. Mostly Holsteins(easy 500:1) raised in dairy because they are the best producers here. Angus is the predominant beef breed (used to be Herefords) but personally I don't believe they are the best beef producers - charolais and hereford are. Angus became a 'fad' about 15-20 years ago and ever since then if meat isn't advertised as 'angus', well, "it just ain't right'.

I imagine regionally it's different but in West Michigan you'll find primarily the above. Though, Maine-Anjus really
isn't that common.
