Yesterday I noticed a very blatant plastic burning odor while I had the heater on in my car. Then I realized the odor was even more pronounced outside the car. I took it to a local Firestone shop and they confirmed that a pretty big plastic (saran wrap) type bag was caught on the exhaust pipe and was melting. They removed the unburnt portion but they said they couldn't do anything about the residue still on the exhaust. I was told that I have to wait for the plastic to eventually all melt off. But the fumes really stink. Is there another way? I'm not sure how long it is going to take to melt all off.

You can try ICE on it and make it very cold then chip it off, other than that try scraping it (do all this when the engine is cold sit over night) Good Luck and GOD Bless

Ok, I guess it is true that common sense isn't very common anymore. It is very simple and the answer has allready been given..Just let it cool and use a knife or putty knife to scape it off what you can't reach can easiely be removed with a solvent that can be sprayed on and is available at most car parts stores. Think about it the pipe is metal and the plastic is...well not as hard as the pipe.

Take your car on to a ramp and splash water on the exhaust pipe when it is hot, the plastic will shrink quicker than metal and this will reduce the bond between the exhaust pipe and burned plastic, now you can easily chip it off.Give a try.
