By that I mean successful in battle as well as lasting empire. I have heard different answers, such as Ghengis Khan, Alexander the Great. I would think it would be between those two, but if there are others that were greater include them as well.

I would also add Hannibal and Napoleon to that list, but I recently saw a doc about Ghengis Khan that said he never lost a battle and had the largest land empire in history.

Probably need to include Julius Caesar, Attila the Hun, Napoleon Bonaparte, Joseph Stalin, Charlemagne, Hernando Cortes, and William the Conqueror in the race for successful empire building. I still think Alexander the Great probably wins the race. There is a story that Caesar went to Alexander's grave and was saddened as Alexander did all the things Caesar was doing, but Alexander did it all before he was 33 and Caesar was over 30 when he got started. Even the bad guys changed the political maps forever...as in Mehmet II who conquered Constantinople. I love history; too bad we don't learn much from it. You might want to add the United States as we conquered North America.

The greatest conquerors which you see in history books were the greatest in their time. Julius Caesar is considered to be a great ruler and conqueror but in some books he seems to be stupid and in others like a god.
We could say the same of Hannibal or Genghis Khan although many would think that he was too bloodthirsty.
You could even call many pirates minor conquerors. It depends on which side you are on.
