"Product Placement" is when a company pays a TV show to display their product. 30 Rock did an episode about it this season.

The reason why a show might prefer to use a fake product: Let's say TV mom has a box of Cheer on the washer. Cut to a commercial for Tide. Tide exec who just paid for his ad see Cheer getting a free add ad pulls his sponsirship.
Then there's the whole trademark thing. I don't think you can use someone elses trademark without written permission. You may think "well, they're getting free advertising" but what if your show contains material of an objectionable nature? People may associate that product with your show and it could negatively affect sales.

The simple answer to to aviod te whole thing unless the product mfg comes to you to buy a product placement.

Because the Brand name food items don't want to have to pay for advertisements bc that what that is what the shows are doing giving away free ads and you should know nothing is free in this world.

Older TV shows used to do this so as not to offend any potential advertisers. The current practice is to get the advertisers to PAY to place their products in the TV or movie show, and if you think about it that is smart business. Look carefully at the "product placement" in recent TV shows or movies and you wil seel that not only are they visible in the scene, they are placed in such a way as to make it impossible not to tell what they are!

If they showed the real brands, they would have to pay a ridiculous amount of money to them. Sometimes the companies actually pay the TV shows to show their product for advertising exposure.

I think its all a matter of support. They don't wanna show that the cereal they're eating is Kellogs (for example) coz then people everywhere and even some companies would assume that they are affiliated or somehow supporting / promoting Kellogs. So they have to cover up the name, just to appear neutral.

I think it is all those brands are trademarked and if they showed a guy drinking a Pepsi or some name brand, the show would have to pay the company

Well the real brands would have to pay the TV show or vice versa to be displayed so they usually make up their own brands.

for one - the show DOES NOT pay to have soda brands or cereal brands advertised.
for two - it is called product placement. the company - whatever it is - will pay the show to advertise their product.
