i have a brand new Toshiba laptop, i left it on last night, just shut the screen. which i have done many times before. but this morning the screen was just blank. so i turned it off, then on again and it boots up to the desktop and then the screen just goes blank. all the cooling fans and light on the power button still on but it just goes blank in the exact same spot every time. i have up to date avg anti-virus and i also didn't have any windows open. im not sure whats wrong with this thing.... oh, and yes its plugged in.

Unplug the machine - remove the battery and then plug in the mains again. Now retry to see if it works. Move the mouse as well to prevent a screen saver etc...

Personally leaving a system on overnight is pointless and quite frankly I wouldn't be surprised if you have damaged / blown the screen with a power surge etc.

however this can be fixed if it is the case, at cost however.

If removing the battery doesn't work, try the "last known good" configuration in Windows. This info is for Windows XP:
Boot your computer and before the Windows logo appears, hit F8.
Choose "last known good" configuration.
This is a good option to recover from a bad software installation, bad device drivers, etc. It won't recover from every issue, but it's so easy to do it's a good first option.
If that does not work, try to do a System Restore:
Boot your system and before the Windows logo appears, hit F8 again.
This time, choose Safe Mode with Networking.
Assuming the system boots and you can see the screen, go to
Start - Help and choose Undo Changes to your System with System Restore. Choose the last date when your computer was working normally. This technique is a bit more destructive than the last one, so if you installed any software after the restore point, you will need to reinstall it. You will not lose any of your documents or pictures though.
