They mostly stabilize (articulations) joints. Keep in mind that they don't flex much at all. Ligaments are dense connective tissue, so if they are overstretched or pulled in a direction that their fibers aren't oreinted, tears will happen. And since ligaments are generally avascular, they may not heal properly.

Ligaments connect bones to other bones at the joints. Ligaments must be able to stretch to allow the joints to move. If they didn't stretch, the joints would be bound too tightly together.
