I would get another dog. You just need to be sure that you will pay enough attention to both dogs. Maybe try watching a dog for a few days and see how she acts. She should get use to another dog after a while. Make sure the other dog is dog friendly. I wouldn't get a puppy because some dogs are very defensive around puppies. Puppies are really playful and don't understand when to stop playing with other dogs and will need a lot of your attention. A puppy might work though because then she will grow up around your other girl and your chi won't be as intimidated as she would if your new girl was bigger. Good Luck!

hi no matter what size dog you have at home you want to prepare them for the new comer. the first thing I would want to know is how is the second dog with other dogs around. If it is friendly you are good to go, but if not you might want to reconside it. Is the new dog a puppy? if so just slowly introduce them, you want to introduce any dog slowly though, for the new dog if it is a puppy you don't want to scare it, don't push it though, then you want to separate them and in a few minutes have them see each other again do this throughout the day. it is a good idea to pick up the new dog as early in the day as possible, if you work during the week try picking it up on Sat morning that way you are at home for a couple of days,, Do you put your dog in a cage when you leave? If not you might put the new dog in a bathroom for now at least until you know for sure that they are going to get along. Make sure to remove tempting items such as toilet paper, paper towels and trash cans, for a bit of time anyway. Let the dog roam the house but make sure that you go where it goes you won't want an accident, you want to make sure that you take the new dog out side to go first before you take it in to the house. you might think , well how can a puppy be afraid of a little thing as small as a chihuahua but it can be. Good luck

My daughter is a vet and her advice...... think carefully about this and make sure you have the time to work it out
after all your little Chi has been the big boss in your
family and now you want him to share your love and
affection . If you decide to go thru with getting another dogbring him in slowly, let him sleep in a different room
to star. Get the new dogs smell on your clothes then let the chi smell around you. Bring in the new dog and let the Chi take his time smelling him if he growls seperate them and try again a bit later. Always remember the
Chi was your first love and he knows it. Dont break his heart .

Who will be the alpha dog? You will most naturally pet, feed, love the chihuahua first, but the shepherd make take umbrage to that. It can be done, but you will have to consistently enforce the fact that the chi is the dominant dog. Is she up to that role?

Don't get the German Shepard. As much you want don't get is because what you have with your other dog is special and you will ruin it.Sometimes you have to make sacrifices for the ones you love like your chihuahua.

That can be hard on both dogs and even you. I suggest trying them together before adopting. Do not treat the shepherd special because it's new, treat them like eqauls. I think it could work if you don't favor either one and show them eqaul love and affection.
