Check the spark plugs and wires, just for starters.

This engine has a carburetor on, here is a few thing to check. It sound like the choke is closing up, on the other hand it could be a sticking valve or a crossed plug wire, you need to start with the easy thing first the spark plug wires then the choke, a closing choke will cause a black smoke and gas odor as well as excessive gas usage and last run a compression test for the valve check. Good Luck and GOD Bless

This is an indicator of a bad timing belt. It probably jumped a tooth between the cams and crankshaft. The cam timing is off. When this happens the ignition timing goes wacko also. It's a wonder it runs at all.

This thing is 20 years old. There could be a multitude of problems like rotten fuel and vacuum hoses, burned valves, and on and on.

its getting too much gas..the carb float or float valve need fixing..also a basic tune cant hurt.. if the card is pouring gas into the combustion chamber it can't burn it all it goes into the exhaust pipe and burns there.bang!
