Since the first two answers didn't really answer the question posed, I'll try a shot at it.

On Gaia Online, the world that the storyline takes place in is called Gaia. We know Gaia as the Earth, so one could assume that the Gaia in Gaia Online is actually an alternate version of Earth, perhaps one where magic flourished side by side with science. The makers of Gaia Online may have chosen this name to show the relationship of our world to the online world, or to emphasize that it is a "world" all of its own.

Gaia Online (formerly known as Go-Gaia) is a forums-based website. Opened to the public on February 18, 2003 by Gaia Interactive, Gaia first began as an "anime linklist with a small community,"[1] but it was openly stated by founder Derek Liu (username "Lanzer") that the website was moving towards that of a social gaming one.[2] It eventually became the chat-based forum website it is today.

Users of the site, known as Gaians, are able to create a customizable avatar for which they can purchase items using virtual currency, which is earned by engaging in many site activities.
