if u need to memorize the whole periodic table ...
than just print out a blank periodic table and write in it or make one urself that actually helps
also use flash cards
write the question on one side and the answer on another side!!!

Read through the chapter and jot down anything that even sounds mildly important onto a sheet of paper. Fill the paper up as much as you can. We have open note tests in Science too and what I do is I fill the ENTIRE paper front and back with as much information as I can. You could write down the whole periodic table on your paper if you want, or at least some of the important elements, which in my opinion are ones like lithium, neon, silicon, phosphorus, nitrogen, helium, hydrogen, etc. Also, if there are any vocabulary words in the chapter you should write those down with their definitions.

If you take notes in class during lecture, and its an open notebook test, then use those notes. On your notes, write down anything that u don't know. Examples are usually good. I would also recommend using flashing cards. And if your really stuck, ask a freind to come over and have a study group. Study groups usually help a lot.

hope this helps

work out wot type of learner you are, do you like hearing things, reading things, or doing things.
You could write down all the keywords in the subject and then without looking at your books, write what you think they mean then correct it. Or read a paragraph and bullet point the bits that are important. you can also find lots of useful websites with games on to help you learn, i don't know if your from the UK but even if your not theres http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/

dont stress out and every half an hour take a break and have a rest from revising

Make the elements into a song, it helped me. Just start from one end of the table, and tell what each is in a rhythm.
