he is a runner that is used for long distance races (1600 Meter and Over) He runs for the first couple laps to set the pace for the other runners and make them run faster. He then leaves the race after the first few laps.

A Rabbit is just another name for a pace-setter in Track and Field.

The term rabbit in track in field is used for a runner who is very fast and his job is to go out fast and hard. By going out fast he hopes to get 1,2, or 3 other runners to go with him and burn themselves out so that they don't have a finishing kick. If you can get the other runners to exhaust themselves you have a good chance at winning the race. you usually will have a rabbit in the long distance races (mile, 5000 meters, 10000 meters)
