Right click your c drive in explorer and run disk cleanup. You can also download a freeware program called CCleaner and it will get rid of all kinds of temp files. The defrag your computer. You also want to check your hard drive space. If it is too full then it will slow down performance. You might also not have enough ram. For windows XP you should have at least 512 MB even though the recommended is less.

CCleaner is a very good, easy to use, free registry tool, and just all around computer cleaner. Doing anything to your registry can have potential problems, but I have used the tool for quite some time with out any problems at all, I generally run the tool after any time I uninstall software. As always make sure you back up any changes you might make to the registry. There is no extra "junk" that comes bundled with this tool. Useless startup items can slow down your computer, this tool has a solutions for it too. It can remove your temp files, it can clear your internet files. I seriously doubt you have this problem since hard drives are so massive these days, but not having enough space open on your hard drive will slow things down too.
There are 4 sections to this program (Cleaner,Issues,Tools, and Options)
The cleaner section will empty your temporary folders, your internet files(including all your cookies so if you have stored passwords you might keep that in mind, but we will cover that in Options) and all the other junk files on your machine.
The Issues section is where you clean your registry, it will present you with the option of backing up changes it will make to the registry. Run though the Issues section untill there are no more Issues, it will generally take no less than 2 times and maby more, do a reboot and run again to make sure everything is gone.
The Tools section lets you uninstall programs, and get rid of unwanted start up items.
The options is pretty selfexplanitory, but in there you can pick which cookies you wish to keep, such as this great sight.

I am not sure what causes the computer to go slow, but when my computer starts to get slow I clear my cache. If your using Firefox then it's under tools, options, privacy, cache. If your using Internet Explorer it's under tools, Internet Options, the first tab of Temporary files, delete files.
Just be careful not to delete your cookies. It might help, but you will have to put in info. like passwords or IDs. You might have to sign-in again even if you just signed in.
The temporary files or cache should delete your previous downloads from the Internet.
Another thing you can do is on your computer, start button, Program, Accessories, system tools, try desk clean up or desk fragment. I think that's what they are called. I am looking at my Japanese system pc, so I may have the names a little bit wrong.
But that's what I do when it's slow. I hope I made it easy, clear, and useful.

A clean computer is key to a faster computer. Run the 3 scans below.
Run a virus scan weekly.
Update and run your Anti-Virus program. Don't have one? You can run a free online scan from CA.
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virus...
Run Spybot and Adaware weekly.
Download, update and run Spybot---http://www.safer-networking.org/... . Don't forget to use the Immunize feature.
Download, update and run Adaware---http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaw...
Now lets clean up your registry.
Run RegScrubXP weekly. Run Cleanup every time you log off.
Download RegScrubXP--http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?d...
Safely cleans junk out of the Windows 2000/XP system registry. All changes made to the registry are fully restorable to it's original condition. You can make an exclusion list of registry entries that RegScrubXP will not display as problems. You can sift through a list of file extensions, company names, run upon startup programs, Internet Explorer history, and uninstall programs to delete what you think is junk.
Download CleanUp---http://www.stevengould.org/software/clea...
Free disk space, make your computer run better/faster and protect your privacy - all in one easy solution. All for free!
Now lets clean up your disk.
Run a Disk Cleanup 2 times a month. Run Disk Defrag. monthly.
Do a Disk Cleanup and Disk Defrag. You can find both of them by following the path below.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>Disk Cleanup. Let it do its thing. You can check every box that has something to delete.
Now follow the same path and do a Disk Defrag. Again just let it do its thing.
Now lets tweak your connection.
If your speed is good I would not mess with it by trying to tweak it. If you do tweak once it is done you should not have to do it every again.
There are many programs out there to do this. I will give you 2 of them.
The first one is TCP Optimizer.
Description: The TCP Optimizer is a free, easy Windows program that provides an intuitive interface for tuning and optimizing your Internet connection. There is no installation required, just download and run.
http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php....
You can get support for the best way to set it up right from their forum http://forums.speedguide.net/
The second one is Cablenut.
Windows XP tested and approved
CableNut is a tool for optimizing your Internet Connection. We have provided a way to tweak any option you may want to in the adjuster. You can load "CableNut Custom Setting" files that are included with the program to tweak your Internet connection.
http://www.cablenut.com/
Again support is available right from their forum.http://www.broadbandnuts.com/index.php?p...
All programs are FREE!
After applying the suggestions above you will have a clean and faster computer. Enjoy.
