the cichlid ive had for a few years is now now able to swim!!! its blue, i never really noticed that its mouth became white, i dont think its supose to be white. and when he swims he uses only his 2 front fins, the back tail he doesnt move at all so its hard for him to eat. it seems as his tail is broken or somthing. there are no other fish in the tank but him. but i dont think there was anyway he could of injured himself! tell me why and how to treat him plz!!! thanks.

I would just feed him like you always have and just observe him for awhile. I am of the opinion that adding a bunch of chemicals or even medicine at the onset of ANY abnormal activity or appearance is not a very good idea. It is better to catch alot of things when they first appear....greatly increases the success rate of any treatment if it's caught early enough...BUT....since he is the only one in there, and you aren't risking it spreading to another fish...just keep an eye on him. If anything gets worse then take action......he might just be gettin old....??

he sounds like a stressed fish. since he shows no definite signs of disease it is harder to treat him.

in general try doing a gravel vaccum and water change of about 20% every couple of days and see if he improves.

make sure he is warm.

if he is an electric blue then try putting aquarium salt in the tank -- you should put salt in with most african cichlids but NOT south american cichlids. if he is a convict he will be ok with salt too -- but i dont' think a blue ram would like it much. start with a teaspoon per 10 gallons and you do this for 6 days but stop after that. too much salt isn't good for them. this helps kill off bacteria and parasites that might be in the tank.

you can try a generic fish medicine like "quick cure" with the salt too.

Sounds like a bacterial or fungal infection. Try treating with maracyn plus. You may have ignored it too long for him to recover.
