If you mean at the cinema definitely 'The Last King of Scotland' - I'm at the cinema all the time and this is a great film, you won't regret it. It's dramatic, exciting, got deserved Oscar nominations and is based on real history.
If you're not going for a cinema then off the top of my head I recommend 'The Machinist' with Christian Bale. It's brilliantly written and will keep you intrigued and entertained throughout - it's a mystery thriller that's very clever. Hope this helps.

Grid Iron Gang is a true story and very recent.
Gracie's Choice is an awesome movie, not too recent, but true and very good.
For more drama/real life type stories look up hallmark movies or lifetime movies. I do this sometime and then put them on my Netflix.
Haven't seen too many great thriller's recently so couldn't suggest that.
Other good movies not in the categories you listed above:
Whale Rider
Smoke Signals
Rabbit Proof Fence (real)
