I'll only be there for a few days as its a stopover from London to Sydney. I'm particularly interested in projects celebrating local culture, or helping to preserve wildlife. Nothing tacky - I'm not interested in dances laid on for tourists in some resort.

Do try this place. Borneo Highlands Resort - it is also known as Borneo Highlands Hornbills Golf and Jungle club.

It is serene and laid back up in the highlands of Sarawak, Malaysia of Borneo Island. I was told they serve home grown highlands vegetations. I am thinking of visiting myself, as a new friend who happens to work there highly recommends. Beautiful place and it's a nature lovers paradise, away from city and but not too far from civilisations either. I think is about 45 mins away from Kuching town. I might be wrong though.

I have the contact if you want , email me. Alternatively go to the website for more information.

Here is the website :-

Oh by the way, there is an orang utan conservation centre in Sepilok, Sabah. It's worth going for the experience.

Various eco tourism available you may like to check out Mulu Caves, Niah Caves, Mount Kinabalu etc all in Borneo.

If you dont want tacky dances laid on for tourists, don't practice 'cultural tourism' It's invariably not run by indigenous people and only serves to reduce their culture to the level of a novelty. If you respect cultural diversity, stay away!! Go and have a look at the orang utan sanctuary or just go to a pub and have a chat with some locals!! Enjoy, it's a beautiful part of the World!!
