was in the middle of printing a load os coursework, when my printer (HP deskjet 332) suddenly announced it 'couldn't communicate with my computer'! Have tried the suggestions on screen, and deleting and re-installing software but nothing helps. Any suggestions?

tried unplugging all cables, and reconnecting....and all the above suggestions. Brought the printer 2nd hand 2 weeks ago but was told (?) it was only a few months old. New ink cartridge-changed about three days ago.

would like to point out to the very ignorant person who felt the need to insult me without knowing anything about me,that I'm currently working 70 hours a week, while taking a part time degree that I pay for without any government assistance!

I have had this before on a hp printer, twice on 2 separate printers. The first was just a simple matter of replacing the printer cartridges. The second was when I was using some software (SONY) for printing photos from a mobile phone. I would try connecting your printer up to a friends pc to find out if its a printer fault or not. If it works you got something wrong on your pc. Try uninstalling ALL hp printer software and then install it again. If you are using xp the printer should work without loading the software. If it doesn't work on your friends pc then replace the cartridges. May not be worth it if it an old machine and you may be best getting a new one. Good luck

Make sure that you are using a two way cable to your printer if the cable is non usb, and if it is a usb, cable make sure that if you a usb hub that it is a powered hub.
