The west side of Germany was always richer, because they received aid from the United states and florished. The soviet union controlled east Germany, which had severe problems and were held in a "prison" like environment. The Berlin wall was created by the soviet union so East Germany citizens could not escape into West Germany.

Geographically, they were both about the same as far as natural resources are concerned. But on the whole, West Germay faired far better. The Soviets stripped and raped East Germany for all she was worth and then some. Politically, the West was underwriten and supported by the French British and the Unitied States where growth and economics (free trade) were strongly encouraged. The East was oppressed to the point that it made Hitler's Third Reich look like mere child's play. Children were paid to spy on their parent, brothers on sisters, friends and neighbors -- no one was to be trusted. And with good cause. To be accused either justly or falsly meant time in prison and being tortured. Individuality and free thinking were crushed to the point that no one was willing to express an idea for fear it would not be looked upon favorably by the government. Industry and markets stagnated. People were willing to risk death and dismemberment to escape to the west.

West Germany was considered richer because they have a market economy...they were owned by US, Britian, and France while East Germany was owned by the Soviet Union and under the command economy or were communist. Hence the wall and Pink Floyd's fabulous concert in Germany ;).

West Germany, by far. After WWII, the (western) Allies liberated West Germany, and it went back to being a country with commerce. East Germany, however, was "liberated" by the U.S.S.R., and was very poor and oppressed for many years.

West (free) Germany was always richer. East (Soviet) was struggling. They didn't belong to anyone, but East Germany was linked to the Soviet union.

West Germany.
It was and is free and democratic, and has a free market economy.
It didn't "belong" to any other nation - unlike East Germany which was Soviet-controlled.
