Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the series of books and the films, but I found the first one really really was hard in keeping my interest. I just tried reading it again and it had the same effect. Anyone else have this problem?

I agree that the first book is not as well written as the rest. I think that owes to a few factors. One, it was JK Rowling's first book. My first fanfiction story got off to a strange start. Also, there had to be a LOT of explaining on the whole wizarding universe, which is kind of like exposition. But she had to so it so the reader would understand everything. Also, she targets her writing to the age group that matches Harry's age at the time. So, adults would naturally like the later books better.

Yes! I had the same problem. It's okay, though. The first book in a series takes getting used to. After all, all of the characters are introduced. Also the setting. And the main overall problem. I really liked the third one, though.

Yep. I actually read the second one first after winning it in a competition. I can't wait for the next book to come out. The first one was a bit of a bore though. Actually the first two. They start getting cool after that.

The first harry potter book does start out slowly because a lot of it is getting Harry from this world as a normal "muggle" to accepting he is a wizard and getting to his new school and world. If you notice the 5th book, Order of the Pheniox also starts out slowly because its just a lot of moving Harry around- from his uncles and aunts to grimmald place to hogwarts.. its just a lot of writing about moving from here to there...

I identified with the first book because when I was an 11 year old boy I also was forced to live with a neurotic uncle and aunt who hated and bullied and abused me.

Yea, it was a little hard to get started. The first two chapters were the hardest and then it gets really great. You just have to get used to the British lingo.
