Sorry brother, its called capitalism. The government can't control business, thats socialism. Yet Hillary wants to nationalize the oil industry and healthcare.

Exxon made a nice profit, but they also paid something close to $27 billion in corporate income taxes, and about $40+ billion in various other taxes, fees, and royalties to government agencies for leases and the like. Then there was about $30 billion in sales taxes that they collected for the government. Even when Exxon shelled out $8 billion to the stockholders in dividends the government got still another billion or two. Sounds like ExxonMobil is a cash cow for the government.
If you don't like Exxon, go down the street to the next store, as if there was a shortage of places that sell gas. Go to the Citgo station, their profits go to the Venezelian government, but they still pay the same rates of income taxes, royalties and fees, and sales taxes that Exxon does.

Among oil companies, Exxon is by far the least green (Download ComparingCompanies.pdf).
This deteriorating environmental performance by Exxon is "highly dangerous" (Climate Justice Programme)
ExxonMobil, was responsible for getting the IRS to audit GreenPeace, their harshest and loudest critic. (WSJ, March 06).
Exxon helps fund the neo-con American Enterprise Institute - an organization which has a huge sway on the Bush Administration. They wrote to President Bush discouraging him from attending the UN Summit on Sustainable Development. He didn't go.
Most of the NGO's that Exxon funds worked diligently to kill the Kyoto treaty.
Some of these NGO's provide legisators with ready-to-implement programs designed to roll back incentives to cut pollution.
Some of these NGO's have membership that includes quite a few state legislators, sitting governors, and members of Congress.
One of these organizations created legislation that would "criminalize virtually all types of environmental- or animal-rights-related advocacy." It would prevent journalists, for example, from entering facilities that may or may not be polluting the environment.
The White House appears to have a similar (if not the same) agenda.
Bush appointed an oil man named Phil Cooney Chief of Staff at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. In June 2005 there were allegations that Phil, an economist by trade, had deleted whole sections of official scientific reports on climate change.
The Chairman of said committee, Jim Connaughton, a former engery lobbyist, co-authored a 1993 law journal article, "Defending Charges of Environmental Crime -- The Growth Industry of the '90s."
What can you do? Well, for one thing, you can write to the CEO of Exxon-Mobile. Given their agenda of deciet, and the fact that the species itself is what's at stake, there simply needs to be more discussion around this issue. Interestingly, if you search on Yahoo! for "Exxon Lies" this is what you get:
1-10 of about 413,000 for Exxon Lies

well the options are the current system. Nationalized gas which would be an unmittigated disaster given the demonstrated capabilities of this government to manage medicare etc. Exxon-Mobile and their associate are the only game in town. Until americans have the will to get electric cars I think you are pretty much stuck.

Actually here in the Sunny state of FL it's $2.13 a gallon. Are you sure it's Exxon Mobile gouging you and not the Tax on a Gallon of Gas in your state that is causing such a high price. Maybe it is your state legislature that is gouging you and not necessarily Exxon Mobile.

3 Bucks a gallon and the gas companies profit is about 5 cents per gallon. Get your facts straight, their profit comes from raw crude exploration which is determined on a global market, when crude was $20 a barrell did you want to help subsidize the oil companies?

I often wonder what happens to the $4.8 Billion in 1/4 profits they make!!
Capitalism is slowly making way for Fascism or Totalitarianism!!
With the enactment of the Patriot Act and the Defense Authorization Act any American can be imprisoned for any reason and with no formal charge.
Why are we selling our country to the oil barrons who would imprison us so they can wage war for the control over oil????

Yea, they might have record profits but they also spend the most. They would not have to spend so much if it weren't all those tree huggers and Al Gore puppets. They could cut down on costs to drill for the oil but not in your back yard Right?!? Oh yea sorry to hurt your feelings but the U.S.A. is not a socialist country.

As long as we have someone in power who is part of an oil family it will only get worse. When are people going to wake up and see the light. We are headed down a road and no one wants to stop it! Have fun

Yep, it's capitalism. I don't like high fuel costs either, but every day I make decisions that will cause me to consume more or less gasoline. Consider buying a smaller vehicle, avoiding unnecessary trips, etc.
