I got my niece 2 gerbils for christmas but she recently pulled the tail off one and decided she didn't want them anymore. I already have 3 in a glass aquarium from the same family as hers and the same sex, but I'm not sure if it will be a little cramped for them. I can't use my niece's cage as they make to much mess when they dig and I cannot afford another aquarium.

My tank is a 10 gallon tank so I think I'm going to buy a new one, maybe a 30 gallon tank and sell the one I currently have. I also put plenty of tubes in for them to chew and bury to make tunnels out of (they love it!). I did have a house in there for them but took it out so they had more room and just put nice soft beddig under the level for they to make it more cosy for them to sleep.

I would also appreciate it if anyone could tell me a UK website to buy aquariums. Everyone I have been on so far are US websites. P.S Great answers so far everybody! Thanx!

I have just found a tank-topper on the internet. It's a cage that attached on to the top of a 10 gallon tank. Would this be suitable to add 2 more gerbals rather than buying a new tank?

An aquarium is the best place for a gerbil so they can dig and do everything the comes natural to them.
You have to remember that gerbils are sociable animals but they must be mixed together when young.
I would never mix two family groups over 12 weeks of age, they will be war on! Advice is if they do fight dont put your hand in because they will bite you thinking its another gerbil, I know its happened to me.

5 is too many for that aquarium, perhaps you should put a sign on the bulletin board in your veterinarians office and offer them for adoption. Three is still a lot unless you let them out to get exercise, it's like living in a closet. If you have to wonder if it's a little cramped, then it is. It will cause stress, which will lead to other health problems. How well do you handle stress? They have no choice but to live with it in such cramped quarters.

Are you talking about a 10-gallon tank? Between 2-4, depending on how many things you have for them in the cage, like little hideaways, water bottles, chew blocks, food bowls, etc. Ever givin them toilet paper rolls? Mine loved these. They would run through them and chew them to pieces. I also wouldn't recommend breeding, because they multiply like crazy and can be hard to sell and find homes for. You can overfill your local petstore that way!

Up to 4 should be ok. Otherwise pass them onto an animal rescue centre - and let your story be a warning to others who want to buy animals for children.
